Sources and licences

None of the sacred text in Sinq is the app's own work. This page records where each part came from, who transcribed it, and what may be done with it.

The code and the content are under different licences. If you fork the repository, that distinction matters: the Apache-2.0 grant covers the source code only. Nothing under app/src/main/assets/content/ inherits it, and redistributors must satisfy each source's terms independently.

Scripture

The Amharic Bible, 1980 edition

CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

From the 80-weahadu project by EOTCOpenSource, under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. This covers all bundled Scripture: the Bible books in the Library, the Psalter in both Amharic and Ge'ez, and the psalms and gospels arranged into the hours.

The verse text is reproduced unchanged, with two exceptions of arrangement rather than wording: the acrostic letters of Psalm 118 are rendered as stanza headings, and psalm chapter labels follow the Ge'ez (LXX) numbering.

What this means: this text may not be used commercially and may not be redistributed in modified form, by this project or by anyone forking it. Sinq is and will remain non-commercial: no ads, no in-app purchases, no subscriptions.

Liturgical texts

ግጻዌ the lectionary

CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

The fixed 366-day cycle, together with the movable, Sunday, Athanasius and ባሕረ ሓሳብ collections, was scanned and transcribed from the printed ግጻዌ by Sinq's maintainer, who releases that transcription as open content under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, the same terms as the Bible text. The underlying lectionary is traditional Ethiopian Orthodox material.

Forks and redistributors need their own permission for it; it is not covered by the code's Apache-2.0 grant.

ስንክሳር the synaxarium

CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

Both editions of መጽሐፈ ስንክሳር (Amharic and Ge'ez, 366 days each) were scanned and digitized directly from publicly available printed editions and PDF scans by Sinq's maintainer, who releases the transcription as open content under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, the same terms as the Bible text. The underlying commemorations are centuries-old traditional Ethiopian Orthodox liturgical content.

ውዳሴ ማርያም and ጸሎት ዘዘወትር

Public domain text

The prayers themselves are centuries-old, public-domain Ethiopian Orthodox liturgical texts. This digitization was scanned and digitized directly from publicly available printed editions and PDF scans by the maintainer, and reshaped into liturgical stanzas for the app.

Typefaces

All five bundled faces are under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits bundling and redistribution with software provided the fonts are not sold on their own.
